CASE STUDIES REFLECTING the impact of OUR WORK

A female client contacted us outside of our normal operating hours in desperate need of medical assistance and legal support.  They were referred to Warwickshire Police Safer Neighbourhood Team whilst Stepping Stones provided pastoral support  throughout the day.

One of our  street living clients came to a Stepping Stones session and our volunteers noticed that he was limping.  During further conversation  our client advised that he had several infected blisters on his feet caused by his worn out shoes.   We arranged for a hospital visit where  he was diagnosed with early sepsis.  Without treatment the medical professionals advised his condition would of deteriorated.   He was admitted, his feet healed and we were  able to source more suitable shoes.

Our client's first Christmas crisis occured in 2020  whilst he was living on the streets using drugs.  He was cold and hungry when he came to our service session.  Our volunteers provided a cup of tea, hot meal and a friendly chat.  Since then,   he called in to see us a few times, reporting that he was making progress.    In July 2022 he came to us to say “Thank you”,  that initial welcome and chat together with signposting from our volunteers, had helped him to seek help.  He is now in full employement, housed and no longer relies on drugs and alcohol.  He has managed to reunite with his children and his future is looking brighter.

Living with partner in a socially isolated way., our client had a  long history of drug and  alcohol abuse with an associated petty crime habit.  She is now  getting ‘clean’ and coping more indpendently, has stopped all petty crime and   their self-worth has improved.  They often  tell our volunteers how our contribution has been vital   to this improved way of life.

A stranger to Stratford  on Avon  met with P3 street outreach in desperate need of some support.  who referred them to Stepping Stones.  Following registration unfortunately our hot food had run out that day  so sandwiches, hot drinks and friendly chat were provided followed by a   referral back to P3 for ongoing support.

Our client attended regularly at Stepping Stones and was always keen to chat.   When he suddenly stopped attending volunteers were concerned for his welfare.   When we enquired after him, we were advised he intended to pop in and see us soon and was often not around.  When he did come back in, he said I’ve got a job now and don’t need it anymore but thanked our volunteers for supporting him through some difficult days.  He is still in employment but as often as he can he calls in for a coffee and chat

One  of our  unseen homeless clients who lives a quiet life away from the town centre had  significant alcohol abuse issues.  He was in poor health for several months and was suffering from a large, painful tooth abscess but had not sought dental treatment as “he didn’t know how to”.  After direct signposting to Warwickshire District Nurses and some liaison with our volunteers, dental arrangements were made to treat the abscess.

Our client arrived as we were closing our service session, having been physically thrown out of  his accommodation carrying his life possessions on his back.  He was crying and in need of support.  Volunteers provided him with a cup of tea, some food and let him talk for a while.  He was referred   directly to Stratford District Housing team and was found temporary accommodation for that evening.
